About This Species

An extremely rare endemic palm found only on Round Island, a small islet off the north coast of Mauritius. This critically endangered species represents one of the last survivors of Mauritius's original palm diversity. The name "poison" is misleading - the palm is not toxic, but the name may have historical origins in local folklore.

Physical Characteristics

A medium-sized palm reaching 5-8 meters in height. Features a slender grey trunk with distinctive ring scars from fallen leaves. Crown consists of 6-10 arching pinnate fronds. Produces small yellowish flowers and round fruits that turn from green to red when ripe.

Habitat & Distribution

Natural Habitat

Rocky slopes and palm savanna on Round Island. Grows in thin, volcanic soil in exposed conditions with salt spray. Adapted to survive cyclones and drought conditions.
Distribution
Round Island only - nowhere else on Earth

Ecological Role

Provides food for endemic reptiles including Telfair's skink and Günther's gecko. Forms part of the unique Round Island palm savanna ecosystem.

Conservation

Threats

Habitat destruction by introduced goats and rabbits (now removed), cyclones, limited genetic diversity due to small population, climate change and sea level rise threatening Round Island.

Conservation Efforts

Round Island has been cleared of introduced herbivores since the 1970s-80s. Active monitoring and protection by Mauritius Wildlife Foundation. Seeds collected for ex-situ conservation.
